Simple Brushted: A Designer’s Take on Bold Typography

I was staring at a blank brand board, the usual suspects—clean sans serifs, elegant script fonts, and classic serif typefaces—already on my screen. I needed something different for a new café project. Something that felt authentic, handcrafted, and a little rebellious. That’s when I stumbled upon Simple Brushted. It wasn’t just another font; it was a piece of art.

Simple Brushted is a bold and expressive dry brush font, handcrafted with a real Kuretake brush pen. Every stroke was written by hand, then carefully scanned and digitized to preserve its raw, natural feel. It’s not your typical digital font—it carries the texture and energy of a brush on paper. As a designer, I found this kind of authenticity refreshing. It adds character without sacrificing readability, which is rare in a script font.

I started by testing Simple Brushted on a logo draft for the café. The first thing I noticed was how it brought a sense of warmth and personality to the design. The brush strokes had a slight irregularity, giving it a human touch. It felt like the café itself—inviting, unpretentious, and full of life. I paired it with a simple sans serif font for the tagline, creating a balance between the expressive and the clean.

The font worked beautifully as a headline. Its boldness made it stand out, especially on social media graphics and website headers. I used it for the café’s Instagram posts and homepage hero section. The visual hierarchy was clear, and the text felt dynamic enough to catch attention without being overwhelming. But I also considered its use in more subtle contexts. For example, I used Simple Brushted on business cards and packaging labels, where it added a unique flair without overpowering the design.

One of the things I love about Simple Brushted is its versatility. It can be used as a display font, headline font, or even an accent font depending on the context. On a shop sign, it made the café name pop, while on a product label, it felt personal and artisanal. I even tested it on a flyer for a local event, and it looked great against a background of soft textures and muted colors.

When pairing Simple Brushted, I found that it works best with fonts that complement its organic style. A modern sans serif like Montserrat or a classic serif like Georgia created a nice contrast. It also pairs well with other script fonts, adding depth and dimension to the overall design. However, I caution against overusing it in a brand system. Too much Simple Brushted can make a design feel cluttered or inconsistent.

I also appreciated the included styles and alternates. They gave me options for different weights and variations, which was useful for creating a cohesive brand identity. The font’s multilingual support was a bonus, especially since the café serves a diverse customer base. And the file formats were easy to work with, making it simple to integrate into both print and digital projects.

Before committing to using Simple Brushted in a full brand system, I always recommend testing it in different contexts. How does it look on a business card? On a website header? In a poster or flyer? These small tests can reveal whether the font will work across all touchpoints. I also suggest checking the commercial font licensing to ensure it fits within your project’s budget and usage requirements.

For branding projects, Simple Brushted can be a powerful tool. It adds a unique personality to a brand, making it memorable and distinctive. Whether you’re designing for a boutique, skincare brand, or creative studio, this font can help convey a sense of craftsmanship and individuality. It’s not just a font—it’s a statement.

In my experience, Simple Brushted is best suited for short-form text, headlines, and accents. It’s less ideal for long body copy due to its decorative nature. However, when used strategically, it can elevate a design from ordinary to extraordinary. I’ve seen it transform mockups into compelling visuals, and I know it has the potential to do the same for your next project.

If you’re looking for a font that feels both professional and personal, Simple Brushted is worth considering. It brings a level of creativity and authenticity that’s hard to find in other typefaces. Whether you’re working on a logo, packaging, or social media content, this font can help you create a brand that stands out in a crowded market.
